R-CCS (Director: Dr. Satoshi Matsuoka) is the organization which has two major functions, one for research and development of computational science and the other for operation of the K supercomputer. R-CCS cooperates with many research organizations of a wide-range of research fields, forms an international center for research and development, and plays the leading role of computational science in Japan. In R-CCS, computer science and computational science closely cooperate, and conducts research and development of common foundational nature for a wide range of fields in computational science, and also conducts research and development for high performance computing technologies.
The post-K computer development plan under the FLAGSHIP 2020 Project, initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014, has set the target of developing (1) the next generation flagship supercomputer of Japan (the successor of the K computer) along with (2) a wide range of applications that will address top priority social and scientific issues.
For the purposes of enhancing utilization of the K supercomputer and the Post-K supercomputer as well as advancing future parallel computing technologies, the Next Generation High Performance Architecture team is intended to tackle the following research agendas:
1.Ultra high-bandwidth architecture based on novel technologies such as next generation non-volatile memory, stacked 3-D memory, as well as advanced optical interconnect
2.Re-evaluation of non von Neumann architectures such as dataflow and systolic arrays based on latest advances in device technologies
3.Acceleration of machine learning and neuromorphic computing as well as advancement of scientific simulations utilizing those technologies
4.Next generation ultra power-efficient architectures based on the integration of various types of accelerators and general purpose processors
5.Hybrid computing architectures that combine the benefits of quantum computing and classical computing
6.Next generation ultra-fast optical interconnect and optical switches
7.Detailed co-design evaluation of next generation architectures above as well as the algorithms taking advantage of them on Post-K

1.Research and development of high-performance computer architectures, next generation architectures, and optical interconnect technologies
2.Research and development of highly parallel algorithms and programing languages for next generation high-performance architectures
3.Research on evaluation methodologies of high-performance architectures and algorithms
