The Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, is a binational foundation supported by the Japanese and U.S. governments and is recognized throughout the world as a leader in the study of radiation health effects. It studies the health of Japanese atomic-bomb survivors in several large cohorts, including a cohort whose members have participated in biennial health examinations over a period of decades, and conducts fundamental research on the health effects of ionizing radiation and its interactions with genes, lifestyle, and environment. Historically, the Department of Molecular Biosciences has been focusing on studies of radiation carcinogenesis and genetic effects by using biosamples from the survivors and those from the offspring born to exposed parents. Also the department has a mission to explore the molecular mechanisms of radiation effects. For hereditary effects of radiation exposure, germ cell mutation is an area of major interest. Recent progress in stem cell biology has enabled the in vitro culture of mouse spermatogonia cells. This advance makes it possible to analyze radiation-induced spermatogonial stem cell mutations, and their transmission to next generation. We are searching for a young, active scientist to undertake such studies.

Activities include the experimental design of molecular mechanistic studies of radiation-induced mouse germline mutations by using in vitro germ cell culture and transplantation of the germ cells to testes of male mice to study mutations transmitted to the next generation. Such studies include the conduct of mouse whole genome analysis and gene manipulation in germline stem cells.
