[Laboratory]
Ion Beam Breeding Team
Beam Mutagenesis Group
RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science
(Team Leader: Tomoko Abe)

[Research Field]
Ion beam breeding team studies various biological effects of fast heavy ions. It also develops new technique to breed plants and microbes by heavy-ion irradiations. Heavy ions can produce dense and localized ionizations in matters along their tracks. These localized and dense ionizations can cause DNA double-strand breaks which are not easily repaired and result in mutation more effectively than single-strand breaks. Its research subjects cover physiological study of DNA repair, genome analyses of mutation, and development of mutation breeding of plants by heavy-ion irradiation. Some new cultivars have already been brought to the market.

[Job title and Job description]
Job title, available positions:
Research & Development Scientist, one position

Job description:
The candidate will analyze the type and frequency of heavy-ion-beam-induced mutation using genome information, study the mutation spectrum of heavy-ion-beam as a physical mutagen, and initiate basic and applied research on targeted mutagenesis in plants and microbes. The candidate will develop and implement genome analysis techniques of model and non-model plants, commercial variety of agricultural produce, and microbes, etc, using both experimental (wet) and bioinformatics (dry) approaches. The successful candidate will establish cooperative relationship with domestic/overseas collaborators to develop novel technologies, and engage in tasks to support ion-beam irradiation experiments about 12 times a year.
