The Laboratory of Analysis by Nuclear Reactions (LARN) is conducting a research project on the combination of proton therapy and the use of metallic nanoparticles for cancer treatment. LARN has recently shown that gold nanoparticles used in vitro increase oxidative stress in human cells. The laboratory has also developed a program for predicting cell mortality during in vitro irradiation with charged particles. The radiosensitizing effect of gold nanoparticles has not been implemented in this prediction tool yet. It will be necessary to develop this prediction tool using advanced Monte Carlo tools (Geant4-DNA) and collect biological parameters for this purpose.

Skills and qualities required:

• Experimenter;

• Good knowledge in programming (C ++, Geant4, Geant4-DNA, Fortran, Matlab)

• Good knowledge in the field of radiation or materials science;

• Interest in cell biology;

• Anaytical and synthetical mind;

• Adaptation and organization;

• Fluent in English

 

Additional assets:

• Interpersonal skills ;

• Preliminary experience on other irradiation devices;

• Experience in cell culture and / or organisms;

Specific Requirements

The applicant should:

• Commit to conducting a PhD thesis at the LARN laboratory;

• Develop a code to predict cell survival during charged particle irradiation and concomitant use of nanoparticles, based on an existing code and Geant4-DNA (important part of this work);

• Investigate the interaction between in vitro cells and gold nanoparticles or other metals identified as presenting similar interest;

• Irradiate samples using the particle accelerator of UNamur and X-ray irradiator in order to collect biological parameters useful for the development of a cell survival prediction code.
