RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS)
The RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) is Japan's premier neuroscience research center. It has built on the twenty years of research achievements of its predecessor, the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (BSI). Taking advantage of the multidisciplinarity of the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematical sciences, and psychology, our aim is to advance basic research on the functions of the brain and the mind—from the levels of single cells and whole organisms to societal systems—and develop innovative technologies in the process. We also aim to find solutions to the issues confronting contemporary society, as we grapple with the psychological ramifications of our own inventions such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, and as we seek to conquer diseases such as depression and dementia.

Team Leader (Principal Investigator position); a few openings
The successful candidate will hold a research management position, and as the head of a laboratory, s/he will provide leadership and guidance to laboratory members to conduct research. While the search is open for junior researchers, interested established scientists are also invited to apply. The research expertise of the candidate may be in any subfields of brain science, neuroscience, or related disciplines. Applications from researchers in the areas of higher cognitive functions and their disorders are welcome.
We are currently in the process of upgrading our existing state-of-the-art facilities, including a plan to install an ultra-high field MRI for human study in the near future.
Candidates for team leader in research related to computational neuroscience (theme 3) should apply to the other category of search, which is running in parallel with this search (https://cbs.riken.jp/career-computational/).
The successful candidate's research program is expected to synergize with ongoing research in CBS, which has four major themes:
･Research to reveal the high-level cognitive functions of the human brain
Our goal is to decipher how we reflect on ourselves, make inferences, and predict others' thoughts.
･Cross-hierarchical studies based on animal models
By conducting research at multiple levels from molecules, cells and neural circuits to systems, we aim to understand the principles of brain functions and brain-body interactions.
･Data-driven research led by theoretical and technological advances
We seek to develop new theories, for example, to improve the application and efficiency of AI systems, by harnessing ever larger and complex brain function data acquired in real-time through advanced technologies. ･Developing diagnostic and therapeutic methods for neurological/psychiatric disorders
We tackle neurological/psychiatric diseases that pose serious challenges to our society today and aim to create seeds for innovations that will enhance the quality of life.
