Outline

This project will evaluate the well being of NHS staff following exposure to a wild flower meadow.

It is increasingly evident that living and working in urbanised environments can have negative effects on Subjective Well-Being (SWB). Studies have shown that spending more time in green spaces can reduce  the severity of stress-related symptoms and  the number of work days lost to mental health related causes.

In collaboration with the Aneurin Bevan Health Board we will undertake a  pilot project to determine the effect of  gardening/ spending time in green spaces on the SWB of NHS staff.  In the context of this project we will;

  • Develop tools that can measure the association between staff wellbeing and different types of engagement with a wellbeing garden
  • Design and build a staff-led well-being garden at Ystrad Mynach Hospital;
  • Provide evidence for a future large-scale research project looking at associations between staff wellbeing and creation and use of wellbeing gardens at hospitals in Wales.
