In continuation with initiatives to drive sustainability efforts in cities, the Future ICT for Sustainable Cities Forum will be organized on Wednesday, 23rd January 2019 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Bengaluru.

The Forum will focus and discuss current challenges and strategic initiatives related to the implementation of the ICT technologies in Indian smart cities and abroad. The deliberations from this Forum will serve as recommendations to the government, potentially impacting policy decisions pertaining to ICT in urban development. The Forum will bring together critical stakeholders that can drive the sustainability agenda for cities

Summit OVERVIEW

Over half the world’s population now lives in urban areas and urban population is projected to rise to two thirds by the middle of the century. Increasing urbanization< puts a strain on resources and leaves many on the fringes of society. Tackling the challenge, cities worldwide are turning to new technology such as GIS, data analytics and IoT. They search for new approaches and solutions that will improve city transportation, water and waste management, energy usage, and other means to support a more sustainablelifestyle of their citizens.

Forty per cent of the Indian population is expected to live in cities by 2030. By 2050, India’s population is expected to grow to 1.7 billion, adding further pressure on the country’s urban capacity. With these numbers, it is imperative to devise smart urban solutions that can help achieve the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

ICT AS AN ENABLER

Access to affordable devices and broadband has connected more than half of the world’s population. With the advent of digital technology, we can design new smart ICT solutions for improving resource efficiency and the management of scarce resources. Therefore, the concept of smart cities emerged across the globe.

INDIA’S SUSTAINABILITY PUSH

India’s urban modernization initiative, the Smart Cities Mission aims to develop 100 smart cities in the coming years. Each city has proposed applications of smart (ICT) solutions to the existing city-wide infrastructure. Learning and contributions from global experience will enable the Indian cities to accelerate development and avoid pitfalls in developing smart ICT solutions.

However, technology is a tool and not an end in itself. For cities to become sustainable, sound policies and efficient management are critical components for success.
